the fremont troll

Aurora Bridge - Seattle, Washington

To kill time, during the last hour of my trip in Seattle, my brother J*** took me to see the Fremont Troll. It’s underneath the north end of the Aurora Bridge and I’m assuming it’s always littered with tourists, standing and sitting on the troll for photographs. I snapped my pic and as we walked away, I noticed a handful of sleeping bags sprawled out towards the back.

The sight sparked a tangent of thoughts and questions. Are they there because it’s more practical than a trollless overhang or is the choice more because it’s an oddity? Would a block of concrete or wall, similar in size and positioning as the troll, be just as popular of a public dwelling? Both would offer some protection against wind and rain but in comparison to a wall, a tourist attraction would offer an endless supply of patrons, a percentage of which is inevitably bound to throw some change their way. In that sense, I guess the troll would be slightly more practical. BUT, does that aspect even factor in as a variable when deciding to live behind a troll?
